MODULE 2

Module 2 (Developing Professional Practice) focuses on the elements of planning and teaching a lesson, and is assessed through a portfolio of coursework, including 4 observed lessons, with full lesson plans and 2500-word background written assignments, and a professional development assignment. Assessment completed during course.

ASSESSMENT:

Module Two is assessed with a portfolio of coursework. You will complete five assignments, which all contribute to the final grade.

Assignment 1

Professional Development Assignment

The assignment has two parts:
•    Reflection and Action (2,000–2,500 words)
•    Experimental Practice (1,500–2,000 words).

Assignment 2

Two Language Systems Assignments

Each Language Systems Assignment includes:
•    a background essay (2,000–2,500 words) about an area of language systems and related teaching and learning issues
•    planning, teaching and evaluation of a lesson related to the chosen area.

 

Assignment 3

Two Language Skills Assignments

Each Language Skills Assignment includes:

  • a background essay (2,000–2,500 words) about an area of language skills and related teaching and learning issues

planning, teaching and evaluation of a lesson related to the chosen area.

Topic 5: Evaluation of lesson preparation and teaching

Content: a) Developing evaluation criteria to judge the effectiveness of preparation and teaching. b) Using evaluation feedback to improve lesson planning and teaching.           c) Developing critical reflection skills to identify areas for ongoing professional development.

Topic 6: Observe and evaluate other teachers’ lessons

Content: a) Evaluating other teachers’ lessons using knowledge of teaching and learning strategies. b) Providing supportive and constructive feedback to other teachers.

 

Topic 7: Professionalism and opportunities for professional development.

Content: a) Reflecting on feedback to develop as a teacher. b) Reflecting on the standards of professional practice. c) Engaging in Continuing Professional Development.  d) Identifying possible career paths and specialisms.

Topic 1: The language learner and the language learning context

Content: a) Adapting teaching for different abilities, motivations and learning styles.
b) Applying knowledge and understanding of factors affecting teaching to your practice.

Topic 2: Preparation for teaching English language learners

Content: a) Planning lessons that actively engage all learners. b) Choosing methodologies and materials, with reference to underpinning theories and principles.

 

Topic 3: Evaluating, selecting and using resources and materials for teaching purposes.

Content: a) Developing selection criteria to choose materials. b) Creating resources for different learning contexts. c) Evaluating the effectiveness of materials used.

 

Topic 4:  Managing and supporting learning.

Content: a) Creating a constructive learning atmosphere. b) Using a range of teaching and learning strategies which are appropriate to learners’ needs and context. c) Giving appropriate feedback to all learners on their progress.
