Abstract

This paper explores the problems of defining causes of phonetic mistakes and errors of Ukrainian and Russian learners in the process of teaching and learning English as the foreign language. Phonetic mistakes and errors are regarded as violation of the pronunciation norm of the English language. They are analyzed taking into account the peculiarity of the pronunciation aspect in comparison to the grammatical and lexical ones and difficulties of establishing in practice both general and specific causes of their emergence. In the process of observation of the learners’ performance in the English language a group of words have been noticed whose mispronunciation can be hardly explained by traditional reasons. These words are united by one and the same feature that can be described as influence of the written system on formation of the pronunciation skills. This feature can be regarded as one more cause of phonetic mistakes and errors alongside with physical difficulties, mother tongue and personal factor.
