Abstract

This paper investigates in what ways and to what extent Modern Greek monolingual dictionaries account for Concession within the varied functional category of connectives or discourse markers. Since limited systematic attempt has been made towards their elaboration from a lexicographical perspective, concessive connectives are examined as presented in two contemporary lexicographical undertakings—highly evaluated in terms of their content: The Dictionary of Modern Greek Language (Babiniotis, 2002) and the Dictionary of the Common Modern Greek Language (Manolis Triantafyllidis Foundation, 1998). Reference will be also made to the New Greek Dictionary of the Modern Demotic Greek Language published by Kriaras (1995). This comparative analysis aims to demonstrate issues and challenges that the treatment of, and distinction among, concessive connectives pose to lexicographers and dictionary users both at macro- and micro-structure level.
