This paper reports the findings of a research conducted the department of Economics for the purpose of exploring whether the course presented fits the standards of an ESP course, or not. It aims at investigating the needs of economic students at the level of Mascara University, Algeria and their expectations. Based on a mixed-methods type of enquiry where a questionnaire, an interview and a classroom observation check list were used, the study revealed the fact that the course presented is more similar to a General English course as the learners were unsatisfied due to the absence of communicative tasks and the neglect of the listening and speaking skills. The study also highlighted the importance of taking into account the needs of the learners and how much it is crucial for a teacher to undertake a teacher training to be a successful ESP practitioner.
