Abstract

The purpose of this quasi experimental study is to ascertain whether dictation can be used as a tool to enhance  English Language writing. This study chose to use the classic dictation exercise called Standard Dictation. A total of 60 participants from Year 4 classes were selected; 30 for the Experimental Group and another 30 for the Control group. A simple random sampling was done through school marks for the pretest. The instruments used in this study were three post test materials and a set of questionnaires. Data were based on the three post tests and questionnaire using a quantitative method and the attitude test using survey questionnaire measured through a Likert Scale. The data was analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics with the significant level set at 95 percent. Results show that dictation has a significant impact on English writing covering the crucial language areas as the experimental group students improved tremendously without the influence of extraneous variables that were taken into consideration in this study.
